With winter nearing its end, many boat owners are getting excited about removing their boats from storage and going back out on the water. But wait: there are some things you’ll need to do to ensure that your boat is ready for action so that you don’t end up with a sudden maintenance issue that impacts your boating. Here are our tips on how to prepare your boat for spring cruises.

Inspect Your Boat

First, remove the cover and walk around your boat with your phone or a notepad, writing down anything that seems amiss or needs to be addressed. A thorough inspection now can save you a headache later on, since you’re likely to catch crucial issues this way.

You’ll want to check the hull for any signs of damage you might have missed in the fall. When you climb in your boat, look for mildew, mold, and corrosion that you need to take care of now. You’ll also want to watch for any signs of pest infestation, including chewed wires, gnawed fabrics, droppings, or holes.

Test Electronics

You’ll also want to examine your electronics to make sure they’re functional. This could mean your stereo system, a GPS unit, or your fish finder. Replace batteries as needed. You may want to turn on your boat to make sure that your dashboard and controls all work properly as well.

Check Your Engine

Finally, you’ll want to remove your nacelle and examine the engine of your boat. You probably need to do an oil change and oil filter change at the very least. You’ll also want to top off coolant levels and fill up your fuel tank with fresh gasoline. Inspect the spark plug casings for breaks or corrosion.
